Weekend Trains

There has been talk in town for years about trying to get weekend MARC train service to Washington, D.C.

That’s for good reason. It would be great if we could get to D.C. to enjoy ourselves in addition to commuting there for work, and driving into the city is a hassle. The Penn Line between D.C. and Baltimore has weekend service, but the Brunswick Line does not.

The problem is that the Maryland Transit Administration and CSX make that decision, not Brunswick. But it’s worth keeping on them. The prospects may improve as Brunswick and Frederick County continue to grow.

Another thing I’d like to advocate for is weekend passenger rail service to Cumberland. The scenery along the way is beautiful, and Cumberland is an elegant old city with historic links to Brunswick via the C&O Canal and the B&O Railroad.

The track exists. The difficulty is in getting Maryland, West Virginia, and CSX on board. That will take time and coordination with other communities all the way between DC and Cumberland. But if you don’t ask, the answer is always no.

Having the option to go on weekend trips from Brunswick to destinations both east and west without having to bring a car would be another big draw for our town. And the more that Brunswick is a desirable place to live, the more our businesses and homeowners benefit.

If elected, I’ll see what I can do.
