Supporting Schools

We owe a debt of gratitude to the parents and volunteers whose efforts led FCPS to put the construction of a new Brunswick High School back into its plans, with a target start date in 2027.

My oldest son will start at Brunswick Elementary next year, and because of their advocacy my wife and I can be hopeful that nine years later we won’t have to send him to a high school that is still falling apart.

But it’s not over until the school is built, and Maryland is in a tight spot financially. The Mayor and Council will need to press the county and state to forge ahead with funding and design. That process isn’t under Brunswick’s control, but we can keep a spotlight on it. I’ll play my part in doing whatever we can to get the new school built by the time this City Council term ends in 2028.

Our brand-new Brunswick Elementary School is also already hitting capacity again as Brunswick grows. And Brunswick Middle School is starting to age: the building will be 40 years old next year.

We need to make sure that FCPS is factoring those needs into its plans. I learned in the Army how to navigate bureaucracy and build the relationships necessary to get things done for my unit. I’ll apply those same lessons here and work with anybody on the school board who can deliver for Brunswick’s kids.

The city government has also historically played a role in honoring students’ achievements and sometimes chipping in for school events. I think that’s important. The students, teachers, and administrators in Brunswick’s schools are all a valuable part of our community.
